Cycling by moonlight is great – you can only really see 15 feet in front of you, so the landscape is an ever-changing surprise that keeps you on your toes. Unfortunately, though, this “not knowing what’s out there” phenomenon also pertains to driving home from the trails. In case a rogue deer or Bigfoot decides to suddenly jump out from behind a tree, I need to know I’m covered in case I have an accident on some random dark road. ]]><![CDATA[Trail Etiquette]]>Thu, 12 Aug 2010 16:22:28 -0800http://www.mountainbikingsandiego.com/1/post/2010/08/mountain-biking-trail-etiquette.htmlI just stumbled upon a great article from www.treadlightly.org about mountain biking trail etiquette.  The article is titled "Quick Tips for Responsible Mountain Biking" and goes into great detail about how to behave on the trail.  It is a must read for beginners and seasoned mountain bikers alike; we can all use a little reminder of both the spoken and unspoken rules of mountain biking.  Among the tips are the following that I feel are most important:
  • Avoid locking your wheels when descending as this destroys trails
  • Yield the right of way to people who are going uphill
  • Don't listen to headphones while riding - you won't hear other riders on the trail...

Leave a comment on what you think of it.  Easy to read?  enough information?  What do you think?]]><![CDATA[First Ride: 2010 Remedy 8]]>Sat, 06 Feb 2010 10:54:11 -0800http://www.mountainbikingsandiego.com/1/post/2010/02/first-ride-2010-remedy-8.htmlWell after about a week and a half of staring at this thing in my house and not being able to ride it, I finally got out on my new 2010 Trek Remedy yesterday afternoon.  What an awesome bike!!!  It was my first time ever on a Remedy, so I didn't quite know what to expect, but I was definitely pleased.  
I went out to MIssion Trails in the afternoon and got a short ride in before the rain hit.  My first impressions are that it climbs very well, descends extremely well, and pedals nicely on the flats.  Seems like a great all-day kind of bike.  I was only on it for about an hour though, so once I get more time in the saddle I'll be sure to update you all on what I think of it.
On another note, I took a ton of pictures and will be updating the Mission Trails page in the near future with a great short ride starting from the East end of the park. Stay tuned!

Unfortunately the trails are still pretty wet so I've been waiting to get out and ride, but this Sunday I'm planning to go out so I'll have some pictures up for the site.

]]><![CDATA[Trail Conditions...]]>Wed, 27 Jan 2010 11:55:27 -0800http://www.mountainbikingsandiego.com/1/post/2010/01/trail-conditions.htmlAs you might have guessed, the trails are in pretty bad shape right now with all the rain we've been getting.  Though it's hard for me to tell you not to ride, I encourage you all to stay off the trails if they are muddy.  Not only does it make a mess of your bike, but it can also ruin the trails you and I love so much.  So take it easy this week, give your bike a good cleaning and have it ready to go once we dry out a bit!
