I just stumbled upon a great article from www.treadlightly.org about mountain biking trail etiquette.  The article is titled "Quick Tips for Responsible Mountain Biking" and goes into great detail about how to behave on the trail.  It is a must read for beginners and seasoned mountain bikers alike; we can all use a little reminder of both the spoken and unspoken rules of mountain biking.  Among the tips are the following that I feel are most important:
  • Avoid locking your wheels when descending as this destroys trails
  • Yield the right of way to people who are going uphill
  • Don't listen to headphones while riding - you won't hear other riders on the trail...

Well after about a week and a half of staring at this thing in my house and not being able to ride it, I finally got out on my new 2010 Trek Remedy yesterday afternoon.  What an awesome bike!!!  It was my first time ever on a Remedy, so I didn't quite know what to expect, but I was definitely pleased.  
I went out to MIssion Trails in the afternoon and got a short ride in before the rain hit.  My first impressions are that it climbs very well, descends extremely well, and pedals nicely on the flats.  Seems like a great all-day kind of bike.  I was only on it for about an hour though, so once I get more time in the saddle I'll be sure to update you all on what I think of it.
On another note, I took a ton of pictures and will be updating the Mission Trails page in the near future with a great short ride starting from the East end of the park. Stay tuned!

We went live and our Facebook page went wild!  The Mountain Biking San Diego Facebook group is already up to 134 fans and counting after just 5 days!!  I love seeing the support from all you guys.  
Unfortunately the trails are still pretty wet so I've been waiting to get out and ride, but this Sunday I'm planning to go out so I'll have some pictures up for the site.

As you might have guessed, the trails are in pretty bad shape right now with all the rain we've been getting.  Though it's hard for me to tell you not to ride, I encourage you all to stay off the trails if they are muddy.  Not only does it make a mess of your bike, but it can also ruin the trails you and I love so much.  So take it easy this week, give your bike a good cleaning and have it ready to go once we dry out a bit!

This site was conceived one afternoon while considering the possibilities of having an organized community of mountain bikers in a city. There are so many of us mountain bikers here in San Diego and each of us have something to offer one another.  I can't begin to tell you how many riders I've met out on the trail and I believe that if we have some sort of a way to connect and share experiences and knowledge, our community will grow exponentially. 

The two main goals of the site are to encourage mountain bikers to ride new trails and to link groups of riders.  It's always fun riding someplace new, but oftentimes we just don't know where to go.  You'll be able to find trails all over San Diego County with maps, directions, reviews, and pictures.  If you want to get involved, submitting a trail review is a great way to help out!
Secondly, as I said, I want to provide links to other riders around San Diego.  It's always nice to meet new people so on the Rides page, you'll be able to find different groups that ride all around the county.  I encourage you to meet up with some of these groups.  Additionally, you'll see a box where you can submit your ride to be put up on the site.

I don't want to drag on and bore you all, so check back to the site often and participate.  The success of MountainBikingSanDiego.com depends on our community, so lets make this happen!
